Meet out sweet little Roxie, aka "wiggle butt". She is the sweetest lady you will ever meet. Roxie is a 6 year old cocker spaniel that came to us when her mama had major health issues and could no longer care for her. Our hearts just broke hearing the story of Roxie. See she was originally purchased from a local kennel. Her mama didn’t know, at the time, that this kennel was really a puppy mill dealer. Roxie spent the first 3 years of her life making money for the puppy mills. She was kept in a crate that was too small for her. Her growth is stunted from this and her nose is a little more pushed in than a typical cocker.

Roxie does need a specific home. A home that understands the challenges that come from having a true puppy mill dog. Roxie is not a confident dog at all. The first 3 years without human contact truly traumatized her.  In fact in new situations she will become frozen in fear. She will not move. Roxie is never mean, but she will just sit there. She will not move at all. This means that until she is used to your home, you may have to pick her up to go outside and then pick her up to go back inside. For the first few days, Roxie will not move at all. Where you set her down, may very well be where she stays, until you move her again. Roxie still cannot do a full flight of stairs. She can maneuver 3-4 stairs, but that took time for her to learn. 

Roxie has had lots of new experiences in her foster home. She has learned how to eat out of a food bowl, before that she was eating off a small plate because sticking her nose in the dish wasn't going to happen. Roxie has also learned that the couch and bed are nice soft comfy places that she loves to lay on. See Roxie has been afraid to go through doorways for a very long time, even in her previous home. Now every time Roxie goes outside to potty, she knows that when she comes in it's "couch time". Couch time is the best! She will run into the house, into the living room, up the small ramp, and right onto the couch. Once she is up there, her whole body wiggles with joy. That's how she got the name "Wiggle Butt". She has the smallest little nubbin of tail that once it starts moving, her whole body gets going too. She just can't contain it. That's when her fun side comes out. Roxie will start rubbing her ears and face on the couch. As soon as you sit down, she is in your face. She won't give you kisses quite yet, oh but it's coming for sure. She wants all the pets when it's couch time. She will even flip over on her back for the belly rubs. As soon as you stop, all four paws start flopping in the air until you do it again. At bedtime, she does the same exact routine. Then, she will find her spot at the end of the bed. There she will sleep soundly all night. Roxie is also learning all about toys. Well, sometimes they are toys, but other times, she has a sock or a towel to play with. She will throw it in the air, then pounce on it. It's just amazing to watch her learn so many new things and become a "real dog".

Roxie is crate trained but we just don't have the heart to leave her in a crate all day. She is perfectly content to relax in the kitchen, behind a gate, while you are work all day. Her foster mom does leave her a potty pad in case Roxie needs it, but most days the pad is dry when her mom gets home. Roxie is not leash trained. As soon as Roxie sees the leash she will run away. This, along with the fact that she is so insecure, we are requiring a fully fenced in yard (no electric or portable fences) and another dog in her forever home. Roxie is excellent in the car and will silently ride alongside her family. She just prefers not to have to socialize with strangers out of her home. Speaking of being at home, Roxie does well with anyone who comes into her foster home. Again she will avoid new people at first, but the key truly is the couch. We aren't sure why but when she is on the couch, Roxie will greet people and be happy to see them. She wants people to sit next to her and pet her. It is her happy place. She has not been around small children, but to help keep her comfortable, a home with older, calmer kids (over 12) may be best for her.
