Learn more about the Shih Tzu.

Dixie do da day is ready to skedaddle out of her foster home and join her forever family. Dixie is an 18-pound, 10-year-old Shih Tzu mix who traveled from Texas in hopes of finding her retirement home. Being an older dog in a shelter in Texas can mean a death sentence, but we know Dixie will be scooped up quickly in WNY.

Dixie takes her retirement very seriously. All she truly wants is to lounge in her bed all day. She will emerge from her bed in order to go outside, or if there is food involved. Dixie loves food. She was definitely spoiled with human food in her previous home. When you are eating, or if she is hungry, Dixie will stare into you soul, with her huge eyes. While she sits and stares at you, she will whine and stomp her front feet at you. You can’t deny her a little taste of what you’re eating. Her eyes won’t let you.

Dixie is fully housebroken and is leash trained. We do expect accidents during her initial transition. She does get along with other dogs but can be slightly food aggressive with other dogs. She won’t snap or bite, but she will growl at them if they get too close to her food when she’s eating. It’s not an issue with people though. Dixie does have a fully fenced in yard in her foster home. She has picked up on the routine quickly. If she needs to go out, once again she will go to the door, bark and stomp her feet. She also asks to go for her daily walk. As soon as she sees the leash, Dixie knows it’s time. Dixie will bark and alert you when she hears noises around your house. Apartment life is probably not ideal for her. She has a loud deep bark for a little girl. Due to her age, a home with older children, 10+, would probably be best. A quiet home where she can just relax. If you think Dixie is the right dog for you, make sure you apply today.

Dixie was recently diagnosed with a grade 3 murmur. Currently she is on Enalapril twice a day. The enalapril helps to open up the blood vessels that go to her heart. The dilation of these blood vessels helps her heart so they are not working as hard to pump the blood. Dixie takes the pill like a champ too. It is added to her food twice a day and she gobbles it right up!  Enalapril is relatively inexpensive and will cost approximately $6 a month.

Dixie is spayed, up to date with vaccines, microchipped, flea/worm treated and tested neg. for heartworm.  Her adoption fee is $400
