Learn more about the Chihuahua.

We want to introduce everyone to the distinguished Mr. Bruiser! This handsome lad is a 10 year old chihuahua that came to rescue after being turned over to a local veterinarian because his mama sadly passed away. While at the vet's office, he was given a full work-up. It was determined that Bruiser was underweight and was suffering from an infection in his mouth. All of his teeth actually fell out of his mouth! The good news is that Bruiser started to eat regularly once his teeth fell out. After a round of antibiotics and some pain medicine, Bruiser now feels so much better and has some pep in his step again. That tail of his never stops wagging now. The little guy likes food and is an amazing eater now. He could stand to gain another pound or so, but now that his appetite is back, that shouldn’t be a problem. He can lap up his meals like anyone else. He does prefer canned food with water added to it. Many times senior dogs don’t drink enough water. Adding it to his food makes it certain he gets the water he needs and makes it easier for him to eat his food.

Bruiser may be a senior but this man has goals. These include following his person around all day, sleeping on the couch, climbing in bed, and soaking up all the attention you can give him, oh and don’t forget a few good snacks. Sounds like a man after my own heart. Bruiser's previous mama suffered from dementia and often forgot to let him outside. Due to his previous living situation, we are back to working on his house training. He knows what to do when you let him out, but it is up to you to let him out. Bruiser can make it overnight without any accidents. Speaking of going outside, Bruiser enjoys walking around his yard. He does have a fence in his foster home but he will also walk on a leash, so a fence is not required in his forever home. No electric fences for this little guy, though. If Bruiser is walking around his yard and you call him, Bruiser will come running to you. He also likes to roll in some smelly stuff out there. Thank goodness he’s pretty good about getting a bath.

Bruiser is crate trained but does not spend much time in the crate. He prefers to sleep in a dog bed while you are away. If gone for more than a few hours, it is best to leave a potty pad out for him in case Bruiser needs one. You can simply gate Bruiser in the kitchen or in an area to keep him safe. Bruiser gets along well with other dogs of all ages and sizes, but would be better in a home with smaller calmer dogs that won’t accidentally hurt him. As for people, Bruiser likes everyone. Again though a home with older kids (12+) would be better for Bruiser. Kids that can be respectful of his small size and delicate age.

With any senior dog, we do not know how long Bruiser will be with us, but he deserves to live out his life in a comfortable home. If you think Bruiser is match for you, and you can provide him with an excellent retirement home, make sure you apply today.

Bruiser is neutered, up to date with vaccines, tested neg. for heartworm, flea/worm treated and microchipped.  His is adoption fee is $200 to help with his care.
