Learn more about the Great Pyrenees. Meet the Marvelous Miss Marley! This sweet girl will melt your heart. She came to us from Texas but is loving the cold weather and the snow!
Marley is a Great Pyrenees which is a livestock guardian dog (LGD). While they make loyal, loving companions, LGDs were bred to be independent thinkers which can make them stubborn, too! Consistency and patience are a requirement for Marley. She is still in the puppy stage which means that she sometimes will chew on something she shouldn’t and has the puppy playfulness. She benefits from taking walks and should be socialized regularly because she will be a big dog (GREAT is in the name!). Since we don’t know her full history, we aren’t sure if she’s pure Pyrenees or a mix, so we can’t tell for sure just how big she’ll get. She is very food motivated which is a plus for her training. She is also crate trained and mostly housebroken but accidents are still to be expected.
Marley already shows off the traits of her breed; she has the “Pyr paw” down pat, has the double dew claws, and she is finding her guardian voice. Yes, she will bark - it’s her job to guard you from the birds flying across your yard so please take that into consideration. She also needs a 6 foot wooden fence with no gaps at the bottom. Pyrs are known wanderers; again, they’ve been bred to guard a large farm. Some Pyrs have actually climbed chain link fences to protect their property or snuck through spaces you wouldn’t imagine a large dog would fit!
Finally, Marley has shown some food aggression towards other dogs, but not her foster family. For this reason, Marley would do best as either an only dog or with another dog whose owner has large breed experience. Older children would be best for Marley.
If you are considering adding Marley to your family, please be sure to research the breed to learn more about these gentle giants! Marley is spayed, up to date with vaccines, microchipped, flea/worm treated and tested neg. for heartworm. Her adoption fee is $400
