Hazel is a 4-5 year old Shepherd mix who is looking for a new family to love.  Hazel and her son Frankie were pulled off the streets of Texas after some local “feeders” and rescuers banned together to save them. Hazel was abandoned there for at least 4 years being forced to have litter after litter with no place to call home.  The streets were not kind to Hazel and she ended up being heartworm positive with an infected uterus, grossly underweight, and having some skin issues.  Hazel went into her foster home a few months ago and we are happy to say that she has just thrived.  She has since been spayed, treated for heartworm, has put on a significant amount of weight and her skin and coat look beautiful!  Hazel has been medically clear for adoption and we are so excited for her to find her happy ever after!

Hazel is a happy girl.  She is a very shy, kind, loving, submissive, loyal, friendly, well behaved and laid back dog!  Hazel loves to go for walks.  We don’t mean like a normal dog who loves a quick walk around the neighborhood. We mean Hazel LOVES to walk! She also likes to swim!  Her foster family took her for a walk around the lake and were very surprised when hazel just jumped right in.  She loved it and was an excellent swimmer! Hazel is not a super active dog. She actually is very much a couch potato!  She literally loves laying on the couch!  She did recently pick up a ball and throw it around so perhaps she is starting to remember her former life as a pet? But for the most part, she just loves being in a home With people who love her. She is housebroken with a fenced in yard at her foster home, will Go to the door and scratch to go out and is completely crate trained.  Please expect accidents with a new home and a new routine.  She has been around a quiet 8-year-old kid and absolutely loves her.  She prefers females initially as a lot of shy dogs do but does warm up to men just the same.  Hazel listens very well and is extremely eager to please. She gets very excited to see you when you come home or wake up in the morning and dances around like a puppy (so cute). True to her breed she does shed a ton but loves to be brushed and pampered.  She loves belly rubs and will reward you with tons of kisses.  You can bath her without much fuss and the groomer said she was very cooperative with her as well.  She is nervous getting into the car but in her defense, she has traveled a lot and made frequent visits to the vet but a quick stop at Duncan Donuts for a pup cup or DQ for a vanilla cone makes everything all better.

We would prefer Hazel to be the only animal in the home for a couple of reasons.  Although Hazel is nearly a perfect dog with people she does have a very high prey drive.  Living on the streets is a hard life and forces dogs to become very primal to survive.  Hazel cannot be placed with any cats or small animals of any kind.  We are also requiring either a very secure 6-foot privacy fence that she cannot get under or no fence at all with leash walks only.  A chain-link fence, electric fence, or a tie-out will not be safe for Hazel.  NO dog parks for her so if you are a social family and need an animal-friendly dog she will not be a match for you.  We want to point out that although Hazel is not dog aggressive she is VERY defensive. Again living on the streets has forced her to learn to not only protect herself but all of her litters as well. Hazel does live with a pack of dogs in her foster home but she is nervous around them.  Scared at times.  She is always looking over her shoulder and can’t relax when she is out with them. In fact most of the time she will avoid them and she will lay in a different room.  She is almost like two different dogs when she is out alone vs out with the dogs.  We don’t want her to have to live her life this way, it’s not fair to her to always be on guard and feeling like that has to watch her back. Even after months in her foster home with dogs she knows, this has not improved.  We KNOW she would prefer to live alone and there is nothing wrong with that.  We want her to be able to enjoy her life, get all the belly rubs and snuggles she wants without a worry in the world! She has had enough worry for the past four years and it’s her time now.  If you think your family is the perfect match for Hazel and can offer her the safe home she needs please apply you will in turn be rewarded with the most loyal loving dog you could ever ask for!

Hazel is now spayed, up to date with vaccines, microchipped, flea/worm treated and treated for heartworm.  Hazel will need to stay on a monthly heartworm preventive for the rest of her life (approximately $50-$100 per year depending on what brand you choose).  Her adoption fee is $350
