Wheaten Terrier (long coat) : : Female (spayed) : : Adult : : Medium
Nellie is a 3 year old Wheaton Terrier. She is absolutely gorgeous physically but very broken mentally. She grew up in a puppy mill with very little if any positive human contact. This has made her very fearful and untrusting of humans. Nellie will need a special home, one that will give her time and patience and accept her for what she is able to do and give. Her foster mom is going to be very careful on where she places Nellie - it is completely up to her and although she has had an incredible amount of interest, the home must be appropriate for Nellie. Nellie was isolated in the puppy mill, not shown any kindness or love and bred for money. If anyone knows the Wheaton Terrier they know that they are a very sensitive breed and they love to be with their people. Nellie will require a special kind of home. There will be no exceptions to her requirements as it is our job to place Nellie safely. Please do not apply unless your home and your family are set up as described here. Nellie gets along with other dogs but she does have some food aggression with her own food bowl, she can take treats with others no problem. Nellie will require a 6 foot privacy fence attached to the house (vinyl or wood), with no gaps underneath or at the gates, as she is a huge flight risk. We are asking for an experienced dog owner as Nellie will not be good for a first time owner. NO KIDS. If you use a door other than the one that connects to the fenced in yard we will require that you come up with some kind of a barrier to prevent her from accidentally escaping. Nellie isn’t aggressive towards humans but if forced in a corner she will panic and do anything she can to get away from you. She will require a quiet home with a regular routine and someone with the patience to talk softly to her and gain her trust. She will approach for treats and she enjoys laying in the same room as you as long as she knows you aren’t going to try to catch her. She does require regular grooming and needs an experienced dog groomer. Please make sure you can afford this every 8 weeks or so as it does become costly. Nellie has a lot of accidents in the house mostly because she is afraid of the person letting her out and doesn’t want to approach to go outside. Her foster installed a doggy door in the storm door for her to have access to the outdoors while she is home and can supervise ONLY to help with this (optional of course). Nellie has been on walks but we walk her with a martingale collar (required) AND a harness AND two leashes as if she gets loose you will not catch her. Nellie has made small improvements as she can be touched now, she will approach for treats and actually follow her foster room to room. We do think Nellie has some potential to improve over time but it may be years before she will be any kind of companion and will probably never be a “normal” dog. Nellie is a special girl and will be a challenge to anyone who adopts her. We are hoping there is someone with a lot of time on their hands and a deep passion for the breed to give Nellie the love she deserves. If you have any questions or think you may be a fit please feel free to email her foster as she knows her best. Nellie is spayed, up to date with vaccines, microchipped, tested neg. for heartworm, flea/worm treated and has been recently groomed. Her adoption fee is $400 - please apply on our website if you are interested in adopting Nellie.
