Poodle (unknown type) / Mixed (long coat) : : Female (spayed) : : Adult : : Small
Lanie is an approximately 3 year old Poodle mix. She was a breeder surrender, cute as pie and just a sweet! Lanie came to us with no history or paperwork so her age is approximate per our vet's assessment. He actually believed she may be younger than 3 but wanted to err on the side of caution since she has had puppies in the past.
Lanie has been in rescue a few months learning how to be a dog. She came very fearful of humans and everything other than dogs. You could tell she had never lived in a “home” before. She still struggles with some things but has made huge strides in just the short time we have had her. Lanie loves playful dogs and will wrestle and play as much as they want her to. She prefers male dogs or submissive females. She has had a few issues with a dominant female in her foster home and although she has not been the one to start it she has no problems defending herself. At this point, it has only been with that one dog and it may be that they just don’t want to be friends but we do think it's best that she is not placed in a home where the existing dog will want to be the boss or dominate her. She wants to be the queen of her castle and we don’t want to set her up for failure.
Lanie has been a joy to watch come out of her shell! She loves her foster mom more than anything in the world and the poor girl is just starved for love and attention. She will do anything for a pet, including smile!! She has a half smile and shows it often, it is the cutest thing in the world. Lanie now approaches people including new people for attention and she nibbles their fingers as a sign of affection and communication, such a huge accomplishment. She is still nervous with a fast approach and will often times jump off the couch if she’s frightened but if you call her back up and show her you want to love on her she will quickly return. She is becoming snugly and will lie next to you while you pet her for hours. She has just started allowing belly rubs and for her foster mom to pick her up, the trust she is learning is just so rewarding and we know that it is time for her to learn to trust her new mom or dad, she wants it so bad. Lanie is very much like a puppy experiencing life for the first time, she will need patience and understanding and someone who just wants to give her the life she always deserved. You will need to know that she will regress moving to a new environment, with all new routines and new people and that this normal and she will work through it with time.
Lanie is not leash trained and due to her fears we have not even attempted it at this point. She will need a permanent fenced yard (no invisible/electric fences) in her new home. Lanie is also afraid of doorways and walking in front of you. We have been working on this as we realize that everyone has a door but she is still very nervous to walk through if you are standing there. We just open the door and turn our backs and she will run in quickly while you are not looking, this is also typical behavior for a dog who has only lived in a cage and should improve with time, as she trusts more and more. Lanie has been working on crate training and although she doesn’t like it she has improved immensely. She is a bit of a barker though and wants to be wherever you are so when left alone it takes her a few minutes to settle. We don’t think apartment living is a match for her. She is also working on housetraining. We do take her out quite often ( very much like a puppy) and are trying to use pee pads but she still has accidents at times. Lanie is extremely smart and we are confident she will “get it” with time and being settled into her home and relaxed with her new family. Lanie has been around a toddler and an 11 year old. She is not a “biter” or anything like that but she is fearful. She will likely not want a relationship with young children and that probably isn’t the best home for her if they live there full time but if you have children who visit she will be ok that they are there.
Lanie does have that poodle coat and will need regular grooming, she has been going approximately every 8 weeks. In fact, the more we get her groomed the more “apricot” she is turning. Although fearful the groomer said she does a great job!! We couldn’t be prouder of her! If you think this girl is a match for you please apply, she deserves a new home with a loving family. Once she becomes settled you will love watching her come out of her shell, be proud of all of her new accomplishments and be rewarded with so much love, affection and her big quirky smile! Lanie is spayed, up to date with vaccines, microchipped, flea/worm treated and tested neg. for heartworm. She has also been professionally groomed. Her adoption fee is $450
