Learn more about the Silky Terrier. Learn more about the Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie.

This beauty is Dixie, a 3-year-old, 12 lb Yorkie or Silky Terrier mix. Dixie (or Dixie Doodles as her foster mom likes to call her and her sister Diva were victims of extreme neglect – locked together in a very small cage for the majority of their short lives. Both tested positive for heartworm. The treatment is long and very painful, but both girls are true warriors and came through the treatment with flying colors. Due to this positive status, Dixie will be required to stay on a heartworm preventative for the rest of her life. The cost for this preventative medication is approximately $6/month.

After living through that shared trauma, we originally thought these two girls needed to stay together. Dixie often acted as a bodyguard, the one who would protect Diva from the paparazzi when she was exiting some fancy nightclub. And Diva would guide Dixie in new situations, like making sure she used the right fork at dinner & didn’t embarrass herself in front of their rich friends. Once separated, they began to fill in the gaps in their own individual personalities. Diva is small, but she now holds her ground and is speaking up for herself. She isn't allowing herself to be lost in the crowd. And Dixie is learning that she should trust her own instincts, make her own choices, and everything will still turn out alright. She is a whole lot smarter than she gave herself credit for. We all reach a point in life where you have to stand on your own two feet (well, your own four feet in this case!) - and that time is now for these gorgeous girls.

Dixie is playful with other dogs but it does take her a little time to warm up. She loves to be outside and follows the pack out the door every time! Dixie comes when called and will hurry back to her foster mom when it's time to go in. She is also very curious. She can be shy, but she is always watching and learning – she doesn't miss a trick! She will perch on the back of the couch and drape herself over your shoulder, or over the top of your head...you may end up trying to watch tv through tufts of yorkie hair! She wants to be as physically close to you as she possibly can be. She is a true little lap dog and the minute you sit down, she is in your lap. Dixie's tail is always wagging - she is a happy little girl that just wants attention and love.

Dixie is working on her housebreaking. She does go outside to potty and uses potty pads indoors because her foster mom works. She still has accidents sometimes – given that the first few years of her life were spent in a cage where she was forced to potty where she stood, it is taking her a little bit longer to put the potty training pieces together. She has come so far since arriving in Western New York. Please be patient with her if she has an accident – she wants so badly to please her people and is truly trying very hard. She is still playing catch-up with some life skills at this point. This is also true to her breed – in general, it takes Yorkies a little longer to commit to going potty outside. Dixie wants to be a success and make her family proud, she just needs a family that will give her the opportunity to learn and grow into the amazing dog she is destined to be.

True to her breed, Dixie will bark if she sees something outside. She will bark if she hears something in the next room. She will bark if something happens two blocks away. She is going to protect her family at all costs. That is her job, she is proud of it, and she does it well. Due to this dedication to warning her family, Dixie is not a fit for apartment living.

Dixie needs a fenced-in yard in her forever home (NO invisible fences). She is not leash trained – she is certainly smart enough to learn it, but currently, she is too anxious to try. For now, she needs to just be free to run & potty in a protected space. She will need to be supervised outside. Dixie tries to climb chain link fencing...she has never been able to make it to the top, sliding her little paws into those metal diamonds takes a lot out of her and she gives up after a few minutes. She is also a gifted jumper. If you are planning to use a gate, you need the tall one. A regular baby gate is nothing for this girl. She will be up & over in a New York minute!

Dixie loves other dogs and has had no issues with cats. She is just a bundle of fur-covered joy in all things!

Dixie LOVES a good spa day. A bath with a good scrub, a luxurious blowout, and having her nails done. The groomer said she is an absolute angel and is welcome there any time. Dixie will require routine grooming to maintain her beautiful self, so please be aware of this additional cost if you are considering adopting this fluffy darling.

Dixie can be tentative with new people. She will back up, circle, and bark for a little while. Once she has decided that your guests are not going to harm her family, she is going to unleash a tidal wave of yorkie kisses and cuddles. You cant turn it off, you just have to let it go until she runs out of steam.

Dixie started her life in extreme hardship. This has not dimmed the light in her soul. She is gentle and loving, kind and cuddly. She shines like a diamond and she deserves all the wonderful things that are going to be coming her way.

Dixie is spayed, up to date with vaccines, microchipped, flea/worm treated. Her adoption fee is $450
