Introducing Gretchen!   When we first saw Gretchen's picture from the Texas shelter, she looked so scared and nervous.  Her eyes had a story to tell.  At first, yes she was exactly that, but in just a few hours, Gretchen became a very different dog in her WNY foster home.  We quickly learned just how loving she really is.

Gretchen is skittish when she first meets new people.  She will hide behind her foster mom looking for reassurance. She currently lives with other dogs, and tends to follow their lead. She is more comfortable meeting new people with other dogs around. If the other dogs like you, so will Gretchen.  For this reason, we feel she would do best in a home with a confident dog to help her adjust. Gretchen does seem more fearful of men than woman, therefore it will take a patient man, who is willing to put in the time, to win over Gretchen. Once she loves you though, Gretchen will love you forever.

Gretchen is full of kisses.  She has no idea the meaning of personal space. She will run up to you and ask you to pet her and even sit on your lap.  Once she knows you, and knows you are safe, she will be happy to have you pick her up.  She is always with her foster mom and follows her all around the house.  Gretchen loves to play.  She loves to wrestle and play with the other dogs in the home.  Initially Gretchen is apprehensive of new dogs.  She is unsure of what they will do, so she will growl at them if they get too close because she is nervous, but after a short period of time, she runs up to them hitting them with her butt, saying play with me play with me! In her foster home, Gretchen has a lot of energy and wants to explore everything.  She has to see it all there is to see, and will run out the door given the opportunity, so she must be secured prior to opening the door. Gretchen loves to go for walks.  She does tend to pull, so we are working on that.  But she is just so excited, she can't help herself.  And she can walk!  Gretchen is working hard on her house training. Overall she is doing rather well, but of course accidents are expected. Gretchen is crate trained, but if you are home, she would much rather be wherever you are.  Gretchen does not chew, but she is a barker.  She is the first to alert you if someone is walking by, or if there is a strange, unfamiliar noise. For this reason, she is not a fit for an apartment.  At night, Gretchen will sleep in bed, curled up in a ball tight against her person.  She is the dog that knows she has been saved. She has to give you all the love she has in order to thank you. Gretchen has been around kids as young as 10 and did fine with them.  She also enjoys going for car rides.  She will sit in the seat next to you or in the back.  Gretchen will sit back there as long as you want her to.  She does not get car sick and does not cry.
